Did the eastern segment of this trail on Friday, August 26th. It was mostly driving; the trail itself was short. Only 3.2 miles short. On the plus side, it featured a bridge, some woods, and yet another little Illinois town. I stretched it out into a 45 minute adventure by taking pictures.
The bridge, an old railroad bridge over the Middle Fork, is well enclosed by wooden railings and planking. I’m sure the rail traffic did not enjoy these features. Riding over it is vertiginous, and I’m not particularly afraid of heights.
The weather was great for this ride. I got to it latish in the day. It was 11 AM at the start, and I was done just ahead of noon. Gorgeous cloud formations, with a slight promise of rain, as you can see, but no rain fell.
Views off the bridge:
That’s the I74 bridge in the distance.
But all too soon, you pass the little town of Oakwood and come to the end of the line:
So… forward, into the past:
Looking east, back at Oakwood…
… and ponder the next adventure.
